An individual can go in any store in the world and find perfume and cologne on display. When one looks at the sheer volume of perfume and cologne on sale, one can do one of two things: 1) Be impressed that the product is so popular; or 2) Take the popularity of fragrances for granted simply because seeing these items on sale so often diminishes the impact of the product. Unfortunately, often times it is that latter as when a product becomes accessible, people take the product for granted because it will always be there. In a way, that is a true statement as fragrances have been around for thousands of years.

Perfume and cologne can trace its origins back to ancient civilizations when it was used in religious rituals. Fragrances started to take on a more common everyday use in the Middle Ages when it was not always easy to pump water into the home and take a bath. Pouring a huge volume of perfume and cologne on one in the absence of taking a bath was a necessity in those days. (While not a necessity these days, there are seemingly still people who seem to keep the practice alive) It was not, however, until the 1800’s that perfume and cologne were marketed in the manner similar to today’s fragrance industry. After 250 some odd years of solid sales, one would have to conclude that the development of the fragrance industry was a success.

Part of the reason that the fragrance industry has been so successful is that perfume and cologne are able to offer a variant of the primal reactions to feminine and masculine scents that living creatures have been reacting to for thousands of years. While fragrances are manufactured products, they have the ability to tap into biological responses and this ability will keep perfume or cologne on store shelves for many more years to come.
